Coed Varsity Rowing vs Garden State Scholastic Championships on 04/26/2025

The Peddie varsity rowing team competed in the Garden State Scholastic Championships at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.

Peddie competed in the Girls HS Jr4+, Sr 4+ and Novice 8+. The boys competed in the Boys HS Jr4+, Sr 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+.

Both of the varsity girls boats finished top two in their heats to qualify for the afternoon finals. This was a strong step forward for both boats, each of which raced well with new lineups, varsity girls rowing head coach Barb Grudt said. Margins were closer to crews that they had raced before.

The novice girls competed in the Garden States for the first time. This was a solid race experience for them, Grudt said. Although they missed making the finals, they learned a lot about what is involved in traveling to a different venue and raced hard to come within a short boat length of qualifying for their final.

For the boys, all of their boats made the finals and came home with two medals. The Boys’ Sr. and Jr. 4s managed their energy well in their morning heats and advanced easily to the afternoon finals. The boys novice 8, in their first appearance at Garden States and first away race of the year, got second in their heat and advanced to their final as well.

In the first boys’ final of the afternoon the Junior 4 placed fifth behind some tough competition. The Novice 8 placed fourth in their final, narrowly missing out on a medal, but having rowed in a new lineup and missing one of their key rowers they have speed to gain. The second Varsity 4+ had a straight to final event in which they received bronze. The last race of the day the Sr 4+ walked past third place in the final strokes of the race to receive a silver medal. All of the boats were rowing new lineups.
