Animal Evolution and Comparative Anatomy
Terms: 1 (not offered every term).
Grades: 10,11,12,PG
Prerequisite: Biology (may be enrolled concurrently)
Are you intrigued by the fact that humans and starfish are related? Do you wonder what unique adaptations separate reptiles from amphibians? Do you enjoy a hands-on classroom experience? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should consider exploring the elective, Animal Evolution and Comparative Anatomy. The course is an in-depth study of animal evolution, highlighting the homology that exists between organisms of different lineages. Class time will predominantly be spent dissecting specimens and researching their unique derived characteristics. We will begin the term by focusing on organisms that have experienced fewer adaptations, such as Cnidaria (Jellyfish) and Porifera (Sponges), and will conclude with more complex mammals.
