AP United States History

Terms: 3
Grades: 11
Prerequisite: Permission of the Department.

AP United States History utilizes a survey approach to trace major themes and moments in the history of North America and United States from 1491 to the modern day in preparation of the Advanced Placement exam in May. We seek to examine not only the foundations of American democracy, but also the challenges the country has faced in living up to its founding ideals. The course will explore the idea of what it means to be an American– who has been included in this definition and who has been excluded at various times–and also examine the growth and role of government in American life.  Textbook readings are supplemented by a myriad of primary and secondary sources, both written and visual, which aim to bring multiple perspectives to the historical narrative.

Note: Students taking this course are required to take the AP U.S. History exam.
