College Prep Mathematics
Terms: 3
Grades: 11, 12, PG
Prerequisite: Problem Solving: Algebra 2 and Geometry or equivalent.
College Prep Mathematics covers topics and skills that are prerequisites for college mathematics courses required for different areas of study including the liberal arts. The course is context driven, emphasizing the development of a variety of mathematical models, as well as modeling techniques to explore applications of mathematics grounded in the real world. Whether independently or in a small group setting, students will be expected to engage in the exploration of different problems with the goal of developing their ability to think creatively, and critically, while at the same time providing the opportunity to collaborate with peers and become more confident in their ability to communicate their mathematical thinking.
The intent of the course is to provide students who have found mathematics particularly challenging in the past with the opportunity to develop a strong conceptual understanding of topics encountered in Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics. Complementing the problem solving emphasis, students will be provided with supplementary skill work to address the corresponding procedural aspects needed to develop those tools necessary to solve a given problem. In addition to traditional analytical methods, these tools will include the use of both handheld graphing calculator technology as well as a variety of software tools designed to enhance the exploration of mathematical ideas. Though not an emphasis of the course, students will have the opportunity for further practice with both routine and non-routine questions such as those on standardized tests (ACT/SAT).
