Creative Writing Signature Experience: Personal Reflection through Non-fiction

Terms: 1 (not offered every term)
Grades: 10, 11, 12

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius tells his son, “to thine own self be true.” What does it mean to be true to yourself? How can we use language to own our stories, memories, lessons and successes? This course will explore various genres of non-fiction writing, from memoir to blogging. We will analyze the craft and challenges of telling one’s story. Students will write and workshop their own original pieces in class.

NOTE: Students involved in the Creative Writing Signature Experience must enroll in this one-term elective each Fall; it is designed to provide an opportunity for Signature students to complete essential program goals. In addition to the initial focus on nonfiction, the course will also provide an environment for Signature students to develop their work in other areas of creative writing (short and long form fiction and poetry) later in the term. Second-year Signature students will use their time in the final weeks of the course to develop, revise and workshop material for their Capstone Project.

Students interested in this course who are NOT part of the Signature Experience may petition the English Department to take the class. See Mr. Roach for more details.
