Engineering Design I – Robotics

Terms: 3
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12, PG

This course serves as an introduction to the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC is an international robotics competition where teams are tasked to build a large (2′ x 3′ x 5′ – 150 lb.) robot that will compete in a 3v3 game that changes every year.

The course will cover a range of topics in the realm of mechatronics – including computer aided design (CAD), mechanical power transmission, pneumatics, sensors, control systems, and structural analysis. Students will also learn to fabricate parts using manual and computer numeric control (CNC) machines such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and milling machines.

During the winter and spring terms, students will work as a team to build a large scale robot to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Students are required to participate in FIRST Robotics as their winter and spring after school Activity. No prior experience is expected, but FRC is a rigorous and complex sport, and is best suited to students with strong analytical abilities.
