English 9: Literature of Community and Citizenship
This class will study literature, poetry, philosophy and art that helps us better understand individuals’ relationships with the various communities of which they are a part (e.g., familial, national, global etc.). In doing so, this course will help students consider their own role as community members here at Peddie and in the larger world.
As part of this course, students will not only develop the necessary academic skills for this exploration — active reading; analytical, creative, and personal writing; drafting and revision — but also those skills necessary for “the highest quality of citizenship” — the development of one’s moral sense; a sense of responsibility and accountability; the ability to engage in constructive dialogue and conversation with others.
