Marine Science

Terms: 1 (not offered every term).
Grades: 10, 11, 12, PG
Prerequisite: Biology should be taken previously or concurrently

The ocean covers approximately 70% of the Earth€™s surface and is responsible for regulating climate and weather patterns, producing oxygen, storing carbon dioxide, and maintaining the functionality and productivity of different ecosystems. The ocean continues to be a vital source of transport, commerce, sustenance, and growth; however, more than 90% of this underwater realm remains unmapped and unexplored. This course introduces students to the biological and physical aspects of the ocean environment through a comprehensive study of oceanography and marine biology. Major topics include the history and methodology of oceanographic studies, the physical, chemical, and geological characteristics of the sea, and the diversity of marine organisms and environments. Ethical and social issues related to the marine environment and anthropogenic€induced climate change will also be addressed. No textbook is required.
