Mathematics and Computer Science
At Peddie, our mathematics program is not just about numbers and formulas. It’s about creating a unique learning environment with small class sizes and experienced teachers. This environment encourages students to explore, experiment and take intellectual risks. It promotes collaboration and generosity in sharing knowledge with classmates. It helps students gain confidence in communicating ideas and instills critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for all disciplines and a well-lived life.
From foundational courses like Algebra I to more advanced courses like Multivariable Calculus, our commitment to problem-based learning fosters creativity, boldness and leadership in students at all levels of mathematics.
MATHEMATICS COURSEWORK
Mathematical Problem Solving: The Program’s Foundation
Mathematical Problem Solving (MPS) is a two-year sequence covering geometry and second-year algebra. Most newly enrolled students will begin their mathematics education at Peddie with MPS. Teacher-guided, student-driven work balanced with direct instruction helps students build the necessary critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills to prepare them for success in our rigorous upper-level courses.
Upper-Level Courses
Our mathematics program offers a comprehensive range of courses, ensuring that students are appropriately challenged and have the best possible mathematics experience. From Pre-calculus to Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, and AP Statistics, our sequence guides students through multiple levels. We also offer high-level courses in Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Calculus-based Statistics, providing a depth and breadth of learning opportunities.
Our students’ success in AP Mathematics courses is a testament to the effectiveness of our program. More than two-thirds of Peddie students graduate with completion of one or more AP Mathematics courses (Calculus, Statistics or Computer Science), with a 95% passing rate and 85% scoring 4s or 5s. This high level of achievement reflects the quality of our teaching and the dedication of our students.
Electives
Computer Science
Our computer science program is a hub of innovation and practical learning. We offer up to four years of sequential study, from introductory work to advanced, project-based courses that prepare students for the AP Computer Science exam. Peddie students often excel in CyberPatriot and CyberStart competitions and participate in our annual virtual Hackathon. Through the Computer Science Signature Experience program, students secure summer internships at top universities, further enhancing their learning and career prospects.
Economics
Economics coursework takes a quantitative approach and is purposefully housed within the mathematics department. Our one-term electives in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Finance can each be taken independently of one another.
