1950 Varsity Football Team

The 1950 football team finished the season undefeated for the first time since 1929. Captained by guard Dick Mount and coached b “Mickey” Shuman, the Peddie gridders won seven straight games. The Old Gold and Blue football team broke Peddie’s all-time team scoring record, previously held by the 1924 team that scored 168 points. The 1950 season saw the varsity footballers score 204 points, while allowing the opposition only five touchdowns. The team gained 1,638 yards rushing, for an average of 234 yards a contest.

Led by the running and placekicking Bob Arrix, the Peddie offensive tallied an average of four touchdowns per game. Arrix took top scoring honors for the season with nine touchdowns and 22 out of 30 extra points for a total of 76 points. Close behind Arrix was the halfback Bob Felver with seven touchdowns. Captain Mount was aided on the line by such stalwarts as “Tiny” Thomson, Warren Mantz, Bob LaFon, Jack Dufford, Russ Hedden, Dick Baxter, and Owen murnane. Fullback Jim Castle and quarterback Don DeMartin rounded out the Peddie backfield.

In addition to beating reicals Hill School 27-0 and Blair Academy 21-0, Peddie played its game of the year against Lawrenceville. The Falcons trailed the Larries 21-0 at halftime, before surging in the second half to a 26-21 victory.

Arrix received all-high and all0-prep school honors, being placed on both first teams, and end Dick Baxter was named on the all-prep school eleven. The Peddie School also received a plaque from the Newark News to mark the undefeated season.
