1967 Boys Lacrosse Team

What a harvest God can reap from so modest a seed! The ’67 boys lacrosse team, returning just one starter from the ’66 team and playing exactly the same schedule from which the ’66ers could wrestle only five wins, stormed to a 9-4 record to become Peddie’s first winning lacrosse team ever. Considering that most of the squad had moved up from an undistinguished junior varsity, the 9-4 record is all the more remarkable.

Of its many “firsts,” none was more rewarding than the 8-4 trouncing of Pingry, one of New Jersey’s three lacrosse powers. Beating neighboring Hun twice was another particularly satisfying milestone.
While Captain Bob Fine was setting a Peddie scoring record at one end of the field, Jim Scrivani was leading the defense at the other. Bobby, moving from his comfortable midfield post to close attack, was fully as inspiring as his play. Jim, always playing the opponent’s top scorer, held Tom Petty, Hun’s All-State scoring machine, to two points in the first game and shut him out completely in the second one.

Equally important as its win-loss record, the ’67 team also set a new standard for enthusiasm for lacrosse at Peddie. In that one season, respect for Peddie lacrosse came to stay while the number of Peddie boys playing lacrosse exploded. That 1967 team planted the seeds which have grown into today’s highly regarded and nationally recognized lacrosse program.
