1993 Girls Soccer Team

Every once in a while, a team comes along that is truly remarkable. Under the tutelage of Hall of Fame coach Ray Cabot, the 1993 girls soccer team dominated the competition to finish the first unbeaten season in the history of the program with a 17-0-1 mark and a Prep A state championship. There was nothing tainted about Peddie’s magical campaign as the program faced one of its toughest regular-season schedules in history. Their play was something to behold.
The storyline of the 1993 Falcons began on Sept. 15 against Villa Joseph Marie, a perennial power ranked No. 17 in the country according to USA Today. Kelly Witman ’96 and Courtney Wood ’95 each scored late in the second half to cement a 2-0 victory. From there, the Falcons carved up the competition thanks to a dynamic attack spearheaded by future Hall of Famers Shaunette Richards ’94, Lauren Sellers ’96 and all-time assist leader Jenny Paz Y Mino ’94 at midfield. The Falcons were an offensive juggernaut, racking up a record 103 goals (5.7 goals per game), allowing only seven with 14 shutouts while coming up clutch in tight matches. Sellers netted Peddie’s lone goal to earn a big road draw against Mercer County’s Steinert High School and in another nail-biter that went into double overtime, Amy Graeff ’94 broke a scoreless tie to edge Pingry 1-0.
The Falcons had a taut defense worthy of their elite attack. Led by backs Sara Probasco ’97, Susie Karcz ’96, Jen Nuel ’94 and anchored by two future collegiate goalies Shauwea Hamilton ’94 (Lehigh) and Stacie Bencivengo ’96 (West Chester), the defense surrendered just seven goals the entire season (.39 gpg) and registered a record 14 shutouts. The team conceded zero goals on the home pitch.
In an uncharacteristically high-scoring championship matchup against Lawrenceville, the Falcons erased a 2-1 first-half deficit to come away with an emotional 6-4 victory. Paz Y Mino and Wood each potted two goals while Richards and Sellers added one. Cabot said, “It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever seen.” As if this weren’t enough, Peddie would roll past Blair as well, 7-0, to cement their status as one of Peddie’s greatest teams.
Twelve different members of the team were recognized for post-season honors. They were fun to watch, deep in talent and unstoppable.
