Christian Barth, Class of 1985
Chris Barth put truth into that truism during the biggest Peddie football games of his senior year, starting with the Lawrenceville contest, Coach John Mackay’s Peddie debut. As Mackay recalls it, “Chris had a rare combination of size, strength and speed that made him difficult to stop,” and he clinched Peddie’s first victory over the Larries in 13 years “on a nifty halfback option pass that he perfectly lofted to Terrance Hill for a 6-0 win.” Against Hun, he ran a kickoff all the way back for the game’s sole, and winning, touchdown – and against Blair, he rushed for 185 yards to lead the Falcons to a soaring 42-0 triumph.
Few were surprised that he came big in postseason recognition, too, being named First Team All-Prep Tailback and achieving All-Mercer County honors as well.
Chris also contributed mightily to Peddie track and field, winning as many as six events in a single meet. He anchored championship 440 and 880 relay teams, and was undefeated at home in every meet but one during his three years as an indoor high hurdler.
During his college football career, Chris went right on building his big-game reputation, tying the Hampton-Sydney record for most points scored in a single game with four touchdowns and turning in the school’s all-time second-biggest rushing game with 216 yards against Maryville of Tennessee.
We salute Chris on another big day today, as he enters the Peddie Sports Hall of Fame.
