Robert L. Tifft

Tifft was inducted in 1987 as a legendary wrestling coach. He also taught French and Spanish at Peddie for 40 years before retiring in 1976, but a year later he was back teaching languages part-time. He retired for sure in 1980.

Under Tifft, wrestling became a popular sport at Peddie. The 1957 team, which was victorious over Blair, Lawrenceville and B.M.I. and which tied St. Benedict’s, was runner-up in the state tournament. Also under Tifft, wrestlers under won individual championships.

Wrestling was revived in 1939 as a varsity sport under the coaching of Tifft.

Several former students honored him by creating the Robert L. Tifft Wrestling Trophy.
