S. Ashton Clark, Class of 1931
Taught golf by his father, Ash won the Peddie golf championship for three consecutive years. He captained the golf team as it evolved from the club status to a varsity team and played one of the first rounds of golf on the newly opened Peddie course around 1931. To show his athletic diversity, Ash also captained the fledgling crew program at Peddie which conquered a good Princeton JV team.
After Peddie, Ash led the Wesleyan University golf team and played in the U.S. National Amateur Championship, eventually becoming a scratch golfer. He also paired with some of the golfing legends of his era, such as Byron Nelson, in different tournaments.
Like his father, Ash taught the game to his children, and his son Fred became an All-American at Purdue University and a PGA professional.
Six decades after graduation from Peddie, Ash continues to play golf with the same intensity and competitive spirit he demonstrated as Peddie’s golf champion. For his exceptional skills and commitment to the sport he helped create at his school, Ash represents the best in Peddie athletics.
