Fall Rowing
Peddie rowing welcomes all.
Since 2006, Peddie Girls Rowing has qualified for seven USRowing Youth National Championships, winning three golds and one silver in the Coxed Four thanks to an excellent coaching staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and tough, hard-working athletes. The girls have been multiple gold and bronze Stotesbury Cup medalists as well. They set a course record at the Henley Women’s Regatta in 2009.
With a National Prep School Rowing Championship and MAPL Championship in its list of accomplishments, the boys have also won back-to-back bronze medals in the Senior 4+ at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. Peddie Rowing competes in both fall and spring. Fall is our long distance head race season with races covering 4,000–5,000m. Spring is our official sprint racing season with races ranging from 1,500–2,000m.

The Peddie varsity boys rowing team competed in the first day of the SRAA National Championships Regatta at Cooper River in Camden, in the final event of the season. The Peddie Sr. Boys 4+ were eliminated in the heats.
Rowing – Varsity Coed at Stotesbury Cup Regatta
The Stotesbury Cup Regatta at Schuylkill River – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Day 2 of 2) was canceled due to weather.
The varsity girls’ Senior and Second Fours both qualified from Friday’s time trials to come back and race in Saturday’s semi-finals. The Senior Four finished a solid 11th of 51 to capture one of the 18 qualifying spots. The Second Four finished a very strong sixth of 27 crews to claim one of the 12 qualifying spots.
Because of deteriorating river conditions, very late Friday night, regatta organizers reduced the number of teams coming back for Saturday’s semis, limiting the Senior Four to the top 12 and the Second Four to the top 6. Rather than racing in traditional lanes side-by-side, the format was changed to another time trial. Medals would be awarded based on time.
At 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, racing was canceled due to river flow and debris. Medals were awarded based on Friday’s time trial.
The boys second four narrowly missed qualifying, placing 15th out of 27, only three seconds out of the qualifying range of top 12. The senior boys placed 22nd out of 52, missed qualifying in the top 18 by two seconds.
The Falcons next compete in the SRAA National Championships Regatta from Friday, May 23 to Saturday, May 24 at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.

Rowing – Varsity Coed vs. USRowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships
The Peddie varsity rowing team competed Day 2 of the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships at Caspersen Rowing Center.
In spite of significant schedule adjusting, the girls’ first and third boats qualified for the finals. The second boat might have as well, had they been in a different heat. Everyone raced hard and well. Peddie’s first boat moved up a spot in their ranking by finishing sixth overall in their 7-boat final. The top four in this event qualified for Youth Nationals. The Falcon’s third boat finished sixth of six in their final in accordance with their qualifying time. Everyone gained valuable racing experience in preparation for the Stotesbury Cup Regatta next weekend.
The novice girls also raced well finishing fourth in their heat, missing their final by one place.
Sunday morning, the Boys 2V Coxed 4 raced in Heat 1 of their event and placed sixth (their time would have put them in the middle of the pack in the other two heats, but that’s a part of racing).
Of particular note is the Boys Novice 8, who placed second in their heat and qualified for their final, even after a wheel on stroke’s seat broke in the first 200 meters and he rowed arms and body only for the remainder of the race. In the afternoon final they placed fourth, just a few seconds off the podium.

The Falcons next compete in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta from Friday, May 16 to Saturday, May 17 at Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Rowing – Varsity Coed vs. USRowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships
The Peddie varsity rowing team competed Day 1 of the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships at Caspersen Rowing Center.
The girls’ 1V and 3V advanced to tomorrow’s finals, as well as the boys’ novice 8+. It was a windy day at Mercer Lake. As a result, the schedule was compressed by eliminating the round of semifinals for Youth Nationals qualifying events. Instead of finishing in the top 14, everyone had to finish in the top 7 in a time trial to make it to tomorrow’s finals.
The girls rowed a hard internal race and their final sprint earned them the seventh qualifying position. They will come back and race in the final during Day 2.
After high winds, delays, numerous reschedulings and the elimination of semifinals, the boys were able to race.
The Boys Youth Coxed 4 had rough conditions for their time trial on Saturday afternoon and placed 21st of 29 crews. The Boys U17 Coxed Four placed 11th out of 19 crews, missing qualifying for finals by only six seconds — with the elimination of semifinals, unfortunately only the top 7 crews advanced from the time trials.

Rowing – Varsity Coed vs. Mid Atlantic Prep League Championships
The Peddie varsity rowing team hosted and competed in the MAPL Championships at Caspersen Rowing Center.
The girls placed second out of five teams and the boys placed fourth out of five teams.
With the strong southwest winds whipping up whitecaps in the first 750 meters of the normal race course, it was decided to shorten racing from 1500m to 1000m and run racing in the opposite direction, from the normal 2000m finish to the 1000m mark.
Everyone adapted well to all of the changes. The girls finished third in the 3V and 2V races, consistent with previous results this spring. The 1V found an entirely new gear to finish a very close second to Blair.. Blair beat Peddie by 20+ seconds last weekend at Garden States. Todau, that gap closed to 6.7″. It was an inspired race.
The MAPL Championship is determined by a points system which includes the 1V, 2V and 3V crews. The Peddie girls tied for points with Lawrenceville. By virtue of the fact that the 1V beat their 1V, 2nd place was awarded to Peddie. This is a significant accomplishment considering Peddie had to borrow a novice to complete our third four, and both Blair and Lawrenceville’s rosters could field 4th and 5th boats.
Final Girls MAPL ranking:
1. Blair Academy
2. Peddie
3. Lawrenceville
4. The Hun School of Princeton
5. The Hill School
With remarkable poise, the boys adjusted well to the shortening of the race from 1500 to 1K and starting the races in reverse direction.
The boys finished fourth in the 1V, 3rd in the 2V, fourth in the 3V, and sixth in the 4V.
Though the boys would have liked to finish higher, spirits were good as they raced to very tight margins in the first three boats with the boys 1V only four seconds off of Lawrenceville, compared to 20 seconds earlier in the season. Likewise, the 2V was only six seconds off the first and second place crews.
The Final Boys MAPL Ranking:
1. Blair Academy
2. Lawrenceville School
3. The Hill School
4. Peddie
5. The Hun School of Princeton

Rowing – Varsity Coed at Garden State Scholastic Championships
The Peddie varsity rowing team competed in the Garden State Scholastic Championships at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
Peddie competed in the Girls HS Jr4+, Sr 4+ and Novice 8+. The boys competed in the Boys HS Jr4+, Sr 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+.
Both of the varsity girls boats finished top two in their heats to qualify for the afternoon finals. This was a strong step forward for both boats, each of which raced well with new lineups, varsity girls rowing head coach Barb Grudt said. Margins were closer to crews that they had raced before.
The novice girls competed in the Garden States for the first time. This was a solid race experience for them, Grudt said. Although they missed making the finals, they learned a lot about what is involved in traveling to a different venue and raced hard to come within a short boat length of qualifying for their final.
For the boys, all of their boats made the finals and came home with two medals. The Boys’ Sr. and Jr. 4s managed their energy well in their morning heats and advanced easily to the afternoon finals. The boys novice 8, in their first appearance at Garden States and first away race of the year, got second in their heat and advanced to their final as well.
In the first boys’ final of the afternoon the Junior 4 placed fifth behind some tough competition. The Novice 8 placed fourth in their final, narrowly missing out on a medal, but having rowed in a new lineup and missing one of their key rowers they have speed to gain. The second Varsity 4+ had a straight to final event in which they received bronze. The last race of the day the Sr 4+ walked past third place in the final strokes of the race to receive a silver medal. All of the boats were rowing new lineups.
