Horace J. Brown, Class of 1951

Horace J. Brown, Class of 1951
As the first African-American student in Peddie’s history, Horace Brown helped forge with his own hands and heart the legacy of diversity and excellence that has become so intrinsic to Peddie’s uniqueness and pride.

A magnetic leader on and off the playing fields, Horace was captain and goalie of the undefeated 1950 varsity soccer team. He led this defensive powerhouse to six shutout victories and limited an entire season’s worth of opponents to a total of just five goals. He was selected by the state’s leading newspaper as First-String Goalie on its All-State Team.

On at least one occasion, Horace launched a soaring kick from his own goal that flew the full length of the field into the opponent’s goal net.

This great team leader was also the Captain of the “Cinderella” 1951 basketball team that rose from meager prospects to a stunning 16-3 season. As the team’s 6’3″ center, Horace manned the “floating” pivot and masterfully controlled the play under both backboards.

Horace Brown is a true champion of athletic achievement, team spirit and personal grace.
