Maurice P. Shuman, Class of 1960

Maurice P. “Mickey” Shuman was Peddie’s head varsity football coach for 23 seasons (1942-64), compiling an overall record of 75-81-6. He either trained or knew some of the greatest football names of the day at a time when Peddie and its prep school rivals graduated numerous players to leading college programs. Among his career highlights were the 1941 state championship team and his undefeated state championship 1950 eleven. His overall record against Blair was 13-9.

As a member of the school’s faculty from 1935-75, Mickey served as a math teacher, a dorm master, the Director of Physical Education, Dean of Students and as an assistant coach for basketball and baseball. Mickey not only defined Peddie football for 23 seasons, he embodied the old fashioned values of hard work, sportsmanship and character, which he passed on to his athletes.
