When we reflect, as we do in this story, on a transformational Peddie experience, we see that The Peddie Fund ensures all aspects of campus life, including the ordinary, seemingly invisible elements. “I remember moving-in day,” said Student Body Co-President Kyle Williams ’24. “I came into Peddie skeptical, unsure of where or if I would find myself, but in the end, I would move in and acclimate myself fairly quickly. One of the most essential parts of this acclimation was faculty, one in particular. That day, Mr. Onion would make himself known to me rather than having to seek him out. Since then, his guidance and friendship are cemented as a voice of reason in my life.
“In his gruff yet somehow comforting voice, he said, ‘I’m Onion, not Mr., not Coach Onion, just Onion.’ I sat there bewildered, and before my brain could create a response, he uttered, ‘Let me know if you need to go to Whole Foods, and next time I see you, I will have something for you.’ Freshman Kyle would sit with this confusion for the next few days.
“That first weekend after Saturday classes and a seemingly eternal practice, Onion called me over after practice. My mind was racing. Had I messed up some set play or drill? I could not predict what could come next. My soccer coach, who had just made me work harder than I had ever imagined I could, was offering me a pastry from a bakery that was a staple of my childhood. One that I hadn’t visited in a year.

“While I have stories akin to these for what seems like every teacher on campus, Onion was influential in another life experience. While I knew my way around a camera, he and Visual Art Teacher Mr. Dale were my basis of knowledge on how to take the stories of various Black politicians, educators, artists and more and create a documentary with their voices. But on a more personal level, they showed me that the teachers on this campus are not just here to teach but to be there for us and to guide us to our fullest potential.”
