Spanish V
Grades: 10, 11, 12, PG
Prerequisite: Spanish IV or Spanish IV Honors and Permission from the Department.
Knowing how to speak Spanish (truly) expands one’s personal universe. It completely transforms any travel experience. It can also be seen as a vehicle: to learn about other cultures, to try new disciplines, or simply to help others. This course focuses on improving oral and written skills through film and literature. As a starting point, we will look at the historical contexts of each story and make comparisons with current events. Each day, students will strengthen their Spanish skills by discussing films and texts, preparing for orals, and responding to writing prompts. At the end of each unit, students will write a reflection and explain how they can apply the central themes to their own lives. Additionally, we will cook, take dance lessons, and hear from guest speakers to order to expand our cultural understanding of the material. This is an ideal course for students who want to improve their language skills and investigate cultural topics in a “hands-on” setting.
