Through a close reading of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and a viewing of Peter Jackson’s films, this course will follow Frodo Baggins in his quest to destroy the One Ring and ensure the triumph of Aragorn and his allies over Sauron and his minions. Students will consider the quest for meaning in a world that is confusing and dangerous, the struggle between good and evil, and the quality of noble virtues. We will also delve into the world myths that contribute to and echo the hero’s quest in LOTR. This course requires extensive reading.
