J. Thomas Nute, Class of 1953

Tom Nute’s baseball coach, Peddie’s legendary Will “Bill” Thompson ’35, says, “Tommy was truly a terrific all-around athlete, and I would rate him as one of the most talented competitors that ever played team sports at Peddie.” Basketball coach Jack Edgar said of his captain, “Tom’s leadership on the court equals success. He has a lot of heart and could overcome an injury and move on to seek new challenges.” So it seems the only argument against calling him a triple threat is that – with his fine schoolwork, Glee Club, Gold Key and other extra activities – he might deserve the title quadruple-threat!

Most notable of all were Nute’s countless contributions to the soccer program. A four-year starter, his eight goals as a sophomore helped lead the 1950 team to the state prep title. As a senior, he scored 15 goals in 11 games to set a new Peddie scoring record, earning First-Team All-State honors in the process. It is noteworthy that, in the process of scoring 33 career goals at Peddie, he was nonetheless regarded as the consummate team player.

His goal-scoring exploits brought him to Penn State where he started at forward for three years on one of the most dominating teams in the history of collegiate soccer. Penn State won the 1954 and 1955 national titles, boasting a 19-game winning streak that continues to shine proudly in the Nittany Lions’ All-Sports Museum. He averaged almost a goal a game in college, leading to his being named an Honorable Mention All-American.

Tom Nute demonstrated a level of commitment and accomplishment that deserves Peddie’s sincere appreciation. The young man with the infectious smile and joy of playing the game is forever honored as a member of the Peddie Hall of Fame. Game well played, Tom.
