This week: A resource worth bookmarking — the Youth AI Safety Institute

Common Sense Media (the trusted, independent nonprofit many parents already know for movie and app reviews) recently launched the Youth AI Safety Institute. It is a dedicated effort to research how AI affects kids and teens, and to independently test AI products for safety risks.

Two things worth knowing about:

  1. It rates the AI tools your teen is probably already using. The Institute has published independent risk assessments on tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Search, and others — plainly labeled (e.g., “Unacceptable Risk,” “Moderate Risk”) so you don’t have to read a technical report to understand the takeaway.   2. It has age-specific guidance for AI chatbots. Rather than one-size-fits-all advice, they break down what’s appropriate and what to watch for by age and stage of development. You can also subscribe to their Parent Newsletter, “Read the Age & Stage Guidance.“
